WARLUX Seminar at C2DH -in times of the pandemic

Discussions with colleagues and experts are currently becoming very difficult. What usually defines a research project is the exchange and input of others – due to the current pandemic, a meeting is therefore not appropriate. Therefore, the Warlux team was all the more happy and grateful to have an exchange in a hybrid framework. With colleagues at the C2DH and with colleagues connected via the screen.

Nina Janz and the doctoral researchers, Michel R. Pauly and Sarah Maya Vercruysse presented the project “Warlux” its research approach, the methodology and data set. Michel continued in introducing his planned thesis in the section “Called to arms” – Experience at the front in form of the study of school students in Luxembourg, who have been conscripted. Sarah Maya spoke about her research for “at home” – Families and communities in occupied Luxembourg and her approach to find more sources.

The project is still in his initial phase – and the research question is not set in stone yet – but warlux is taking form.

Memories of the front – Digital archive of Soviet Jewish soldiers in WWII

With over 30 million men, the Soviet Red Army was the largest and most ethnically diverse armed force ever assembled. 450,000 of these troops were Soviet-Jewish soldiers. The Blavatnik Archive is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to preserving and disseminating primary source materials that contribute to the study of 20th century Jewish and world history, with a special emphasis on World War I, World War II, and Soviet Russia. The Archive was founded in 2005 by American industrialist and philanthropist Len Blavatnik to reflect his commitment to cultural heritage, and expand his support for primary-source-based scholarship and education. Primarily through its metadata-rich, item-based website, the Archive shares its holdings as widely as possible for research, education, and public enrichment.

First interview conducted with witness

The Warlux team conducted its first interview with a woman from Walferdange.

Interview (stock picture)

Born in 1927, she had been drafted on the 18th August 1944 and so was due to be sent to Germany. The war ended a few days later and she escaped the labour service (Reichsarbeitsdienst).

The team she talked about her fear of being sent to the German Reich and the consequences for her family. She told the warlux project about life under occupation and the liberation by the U.S. troops.

The interview was conducted via phone because of safety and health restrictions due to Covid-19.

We will transcribe the interview and add her story with her name to our data base and use her biography in our analysis of life sequences of the affected people.

Testimonies from women who were conscripted in the Reichsarbeitsdienst and kriegshilfsdienst

On the occasion of the day of remembrance on Sunday, October 18th 2020, Luxembourg commemorated the women and men who were conscripted into the Nazi organizations and forces. 3614 women were among the nearly 12,000 affected. 58 women died. Articles and reports about the fate of the women were broadcasted and published during the last days – and give the project “WARLUX” a unique source to conduct further research about the biographies of these women.
